Capstone makes natural gas turbines that are about the size of a TV set. Though small, the turbines are strong enough to power a typical office building or convenience store.
A company spokesperson says the newly formed Capstone California unit plans to open offices in Orange County, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Sacramento. The expansion is aimed at garnering a larger share of the lucrative market for power in California, where a shortage of electricity and gas has sent utility bills soaring and caused many businesses to temporarily shut down because they didn't have any power.
Capstone Turbine opened its California headquarters last year by moving into AMB's Airport Business Park, a 33-acre project on the west side of Van Nuys Airport. It took 78,711 sf at 16640 Stagg St., in a 10-year deal valued at $5.9 million.
