Arts and Crafts Chain Takes Big-Box Space

COLUMBUS, GA-Hobby Lobby is entering the Columbus market with a 10-year lease on big-box space vacated by Home Quarters more than a year ago. The lease marks the sixth HQ store Hobby Lobby has used to move into a market.

COLUMBUS, GA-The first Hobby Lobby Creative Center will open in Columbus in about three months. The arts and crafts retailer, based in Oklahoma City, has signed a 10-year lease for 60,400 sf in the Airport Thruway center in Britt David Shopping Center. The company will spend nearly $500,000 to renovate the space previously occupied by Home Quarters, a now defunct home improvement chain. The space has been vacant since HQ closed its store during the fourth quarter of 1999.

Hobby Lobby has entered a number of markets in the Midwest and Southeast by moving into empty big-box space. This is the sixth former HQ store the company has leased. The retailer has also taken space in about 50 former Wal-Mart buildings. The 28-year old chain, which currently has about 250 stores, has been opening 20 to 25 outlets annually since 1990.
