Residents who spoke at a public hearing on the project on Tuesday expressed concern about traffic and historical preservation. Cityleaders, including Mayor Tom Smisek, heard input on the report and emphasized that the city is still open to changes.

The city released the environmental impact report last month and is accepting public comments through March 12. The full report is due for approval in May. The preliminary report is available for review at the Coronado library.

The 113-year-old tourist mecca generates about $7 million in hotel taxes, roughly half of the city's total tax intake.

Hotel owner Destination Development Corp. has planned an extensive 20-year program of renovations. It includes adding a 20,000-sfconference center, a spa and fitness facility, and restoring some of the resort's original architecture.
