New commercial construction, which includes retail and office, rose nearly 26% in January, to $70.5 million from $56 million during the same month last year. Luxury apartment complexes continued to fuel the county's construction activity in January.
Builders pulled permits for 1,178 multifamily units during the month, including 970 for the Rio Vista project in Mission Valley. That's more than double the 508 permits pulled in January 2000.
Builders also pulled 701 permits for single-family homes last month, up nearly 4% over the 675 permits issued last year in January. Single-family permit dollar volume was $166.6 million last month, up slightly from $163 million last year during the same month.
