A ground-breaking date hasn't been set but the state hopes to have some trains running by 2003. Some of the funding is expected to come from the $12 billion Amtrak will borrow if it receives congressional approval for the upgrades, according to the state.
Besides the construction of the new station, Downtown tracks would be increased to seven from three and new rail bridges would be built at four intersections.
The new station would be multi-modal, serving Greyhound, Amtrak, and commuter trains to be operated by the Charlotte Area Transit System. CATS hopes to have those trains running to cities in north Mecklenburg County by 2003. By 2010, Amtrak hopes to complete track improvements along the East Coast, allowing trains to run 100 mph between Charlotte and Washington, DC.
