The new main entrance will include a 5,000-sf gift shop, café and restaurants. Construction is expected to start in 2002 and will take 1 1/2 years to complete. The existing main entrance has the capability to handle 300,000 to 500,000 visitors annually, while the zoo draws 1.2 million visitors each year.
The Janus gift will pay for half of the $14-million entrance project. The balance will come from a $62.5 million bond initiative voters had adopted in November 1999.
