Dr. Edward Leamer, a former Harvard law professor and current director of forecast for the UCLA Anderson School of Economics, told guests attending yesterday's Chicago Title Presidents Forum and 2001 Economic Forecast, held at the La Jolla Marriott that "the future looks good for all of Southern California compared to the rest of the nation."

"Contrary to some pundits predicting doom and gloom, San Diego County and the region is practically immune from a significant economic downturn, if you study the most significant economic benchmarks others have completely overlooked," Learner said.

Leamer said that he throws "cold water" on so-called "expert economists" who are making doomsday predictions without fully assessing the economic health of the country on a region-by-region basis.

"Southern California has already gone through its recession," declared Leamer. "It happened 10 years ago and the region has been on an economic upswing since. What you're hearing in the national press is really, in my opinion, a lot of trash talk."
