During the first phase and the first five years, plans call for construction of four cardiac operating rooms, a 72,000-sf outpatient and research building and an 800-car parking garage at the Hospital Hill campus.

In Overland Park, at Children's Mercy South, plans call for a 45,000-sf building that will house specialty clinics, urgent care and a dozen inpatient beds. It will also include a new parking surface to accommodate 400 vehicles.

Additional phases call for a four-story, 108,000-sf clinic and research facility and a three-story, 60,000-sf education and office building at Hospital Hill. A 400-space parking garage is also to be built. Later plans call for a 56,000 sf office building at Children's Mercy South.

"This will enable us to better serve patients and fulfill our research vision, which is to make better lives for our children," said Randall O'Donnell, president and chief executive officer of Children's Mercy.

In recent year, Children's Mercy has added more than $100 million in improvements, including new and expanded facilities. Additions at the Hospital Hill campus have included two new inpatient towers and an outpatient center. Children's Mercy South was opened in 1997.

Children's Mercy Hospital has recently joined alliances with the Stowers Institute, the University of Kansas Medical Center and Midwest Research Institute.

Biomedical research has become a priority of Kansas City officials and civic leaders who want to put Kansas City in the top 10 category for the nation.

Much attention is already being garnered by the fall opening of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research near the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
