The city has wanted to sell the site for a while but it faced opposition from local leaders in the Chinatown community, who wanted to use the site for a school. An agreement was reached in which the city would sell the land to a developer and apply the proceeds to a new school in Chinatown. The recent changes in the economy have made selling the property more of an urgent consideration.

Merredith Baumann, spokesperson for the Boston Redevelopment Authority, confirms for GlobeSt.com, that the BRA, which owns the property, is getting ready to sell the site. "We are preparing an RFP now," she tells GolbeSt.com. "It will be sold at market rate and monies from the sale will be used to develop a school in the South Cove area." While Baumann says she cannot comment on how much the BRA will ask for the property she did tell GlobeSt.com that a new school could get as much as $13 million from the sale of the site.
