County Officials Reject LAX Expansion Plan, Favor Shifting Excess Traffic Elsewhere

LOS ANGELES-County officials have voted down a pro-LAX expansion plan by a margin of 2-1, in favor of a plan that would shift airport growth to neighboring counties.

LOS ANGELES-The proposed $12-billion LAX expansion program faces new setbacks, with a recent 2-1 vote by the Transportation Committee of the Southern California Association of Governments rejecting a pro-LAX expansion plan.

The plan was defeated in favor of an alternate plan that would limit passenger traffic through LAX to 78 million a year and shift airport expansion to Orange County and neighboring areas. The action is part of the planning committee’s attempt to draft long-range guidelines for Southern California’s airport growth in six neighboring counties over the next 25 years. Although the alternate plan won out, it still will require at least two additional votes by the planning agency.
