Minneapolis City Council Approves Tougher Historic Preservation Ordinance

MINNEAPOLIS-The revisions clarify and give the city more review authority over paint color and landscaping. Buildings do not need be of a certain age to achieve historic status.

MINNEAPOLIS-This city got a stronger preservation policy when its city council approved a revised ordinance Friday. The new ordinance will clear up what it takes to receive historic designation — such as whether a significant architect or person is associated with the building.

Buildings do not need be of a certain age to achieve the status. Also, it expands the review of the Heritage Preservation Commission, which now can review paint color and landscaping. The city can also require an owner to keep up the building or sell it. The ordinance is not simply more restrictive. It also allows uses for historic buildings that might conflict with the local zoning code.
