SAN FRANCISCO-Home Depot is backing away from plans to open its first San Francisco store in Visitacion Valley, albeit not be choice. The home improvement chain made the decision as the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a measure barring Home Depot – or any other big-box retailer – from using the 13.5-acre parcel at Bayshore Boulevard and Leland Avenue for at least a year.

The legislation prohibits the construction of any store larger than 65,000 sf, much smaller than Home Depot’s typical 100,000 sf stores. Residents in Visitacion Valley say they would like to see built at the site a transit village, a mix of housing, grocery stores and either a child-care facility or a college campus.
