Hospital Accelerates Expansion Plan

BOSTON-Massachusetts General Hospital speeds up its building plan due to rising construction costs and an increase in its volume of cancer patients. The hospital plans on building two buildings by 2004.

BOSTON-An increase in the number of cancer patients combined with rising construction costs has compelled Massachusetts General Hospital here to speed up its building plan. The $309 million project’s completion is now slated for two years earlier than planned in 2004.

“We are speeding up the process,” Dr. Michael Jellinek, senior vice president of administration at MGH, tells GlobeSt.com. “This was originally a three-phase project which we will now build in two steps.” The project involves erecting two buildings of 380,000 sf and 220,000 sf. The third step, which was supposed to be an addition to the first building will now be rolled into the first step.
