Embarcadero Center comprises more than 3.41 million sf of office space in five office towers, 350,000 sf of retail and restaurant space and the historic Old Federal Reserve Bank. The center is the gateway to the Downtown Waterfront District.

The renovation of Embarcadero Center's retail areas is the first upgrade to the complex since its acquisition by Boston Properties two years ago. Under the direction of architectural firm Skidmore, Owing & Merrill, Boston Properties says the renovation will bring a fresh and vivid new look to its shopping and dining areas.

Among the highlights of the project will be inviting new entrances along Sacramento Street for Building One, Two and Three, the renovation of Sacramento Alley and a grand new stairway framing Justin Herman Plaza and Four Embarcadero Center.

To complement all the physical changes, Embarcadero Center, designed in the 1960s by John Portman, will add new graphics to identify each building more clearly. Other enhancements include new signage for the retail areas and the addition of vibrant, backlit advertising panels offering news and information on seasonal promotions and events throughout the center.

Each of the three Sacramento Street entrances to Embarcadero Center will feature new canopies and signage. Sacramento Alley, a passageway between Four Embarcadero Center and the Hyatt Regency, will take on a new look with eye-catching new signage at its entrance and a dramatic glass and steel canopy overhead, according to the company's spokesperson.

The renovations are being made possible by the expiration of several five- and 10-year leases running out. So, in addition to the renovations, Boston Properties is also looking at re-tenanting, says the spokesperson. Among the retailers being targeted are those in men's apparel and shoes, women's career apparel and beauty and spa services.
