Olathe City Officials Agree to Raise Hotel Tax to Draw NAIA

OLATHE, KS-The NAIA is expected to make a decision on its new headquarters this week. Other cities in the running include O'Fallon, MO, near St. Louis; and Fort Wayne, IN. The NAIA has been in Tulsa, OK since 1993.

OLATHE, KS-City officials here are busy trying to lure the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics to relocate its headquarters from Tulsa to this southern Johnson County suburb. Part of the incentive package that is being offered is a recently agreed upon $1-million contribution to the NAIA that will come from raised hotel taxes.

The tax would be go up from 4% to 6%, enough to generate $200,000 per year. Of that amount, the NAIA would get $100,000 for 10 years.

While the city council agreed on the increased hotel tax and did not place restrictions on the money, the board of education delayed its decision to commit another $1 million to the NAIA.
