The proposal was defeated by a 66%-34% margin, with 4,388 people casting ballots against the pending project. The non-binding measure calls for the construction of a 550-megawatt power plant that burns natural gas. It would be the first power plant to be built in the county in more than 20 years.

The power plant proposal was rejected as part of yesterday's municipal elections. It is essentially an advisory measure to determine whether the majority of South Gate voters support or oppose the construction of a South Gate power plant.

The developer, Vernon-based Sunlaw Energy Inc., originally said it would abide by the results of the election, but has yet to decide if it will relocate the project. Representatives from the company are now saying that the project's opponents misinformed voters, thus causing fraudulent results. Power plant opponents have denied these charges.
