Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co. had been operating a facility that the Air Force first built in 1957. Air Force spokeswoman Judy Charles says she doesn't know how much sf the site's multi-buildings contain. Lockheed had used the complex to design, manufacture, assemble and test Titan I and Titan II missiles and Titan III and Titan IV Space Launch Vehicles, as well as other space exploration technology.
Lockheed Martin owns 4,700 acres that completely surround the 464-acre tract. The Air Force has agreed to cleanup any environmental problems at the site. The tract is eligible to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places because the plant had been an important place for the development of missile and space exploration technology. The Air Force has created an exhibit at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum at the former Lowry Air Force Base in Denver to commemorate the site.
