The redevelopment project, known as Glendale Town Center, will be constructed on 12 acres bounded by Brand Boulevard and Colorado Street. The mixed-use complex will encompass between 300,000 sf and 400,000 sf and will consist of retail, residential and office components set around a large civic plaza.

The city council decision will enable Caruso to negotiate a development agreement with the city's Redevelopment Agency. In the meantime, the developer plans to solicit community input to create a detailed project plan for the center. The project's design team is headed up by Dave Williams, Caruso's VP of architecture and design, and includes Boston-based architects Elkus/Manfredi and landscape architects Lifescapes.

"We are delighted with the enthusiasm and support our team received today from the city council," says Rick J. Caruso, CEO of Caruso Affiliated Holdings. "This is an important first step, and we look forward to returning to council with a fully-developed plan that responds to community input and will be embraced as a gathering place for Glendale."

Caruso has developed a number of popular open-air retail centers in the Southland, including Encino Marketplace, the Promenade at Westlake Village and the Commons at Calabasas. The developer is currently working on the Grove at Farmers Market, the 640,000-sf outdoor retail project at Third and Fairfax.
