WALNUT CREEK, CA-The City Council has agreed to let plans for a 14-screen theater on Mt. Diablo Boulevard to continue, but locally based developer Blake Hunt Ventures will have to trim 3,000 sf off the 117,440 sf project. The council members made its decision late last week after hearing testimonies from two groups that filed appeals in January with the city to block the Olympic Place project.
The Walnut Creek development will include a 2,660-seat cinema, 49,223 sf of ground-level retail shops and restaurants, 8,200 sf of office space and a 600-plus parking garage. Once Olympic Place opens in the summer of 2002, the nearby Festival Cinema, a dilapidated, five-screen movie theater, will be torn down, a city official with the planning department confirmed.
