The expansion is among several projects planned for Michigan resorts, including a $30-million retail and entertainment center in Frankenmuth and a $150-million addition to Boyne USA Resorts.

"In creating the Crystal Village, We are taking careful measures to incorporate the character and history of our Northern Michigan setting," says Chris Maclnnes, president of Crystal Properties and senior vice president of Crystal Mountain. "The early stages of our planning included taking photographs of and studying the architecture and buildings of our neighboring Northern Michigan's towns and villages."

He said the communities were built many years ago, and have an "additive" quality with varying architecture' styles and features.

"You won't see large, overbearing buildings in Crystal's new village," Maclnnes continues. "Instead, our Village will respect the small scale of our communities, and will blend into our up-north environment. Crystal's will be a 21st century village, but rooted deeply in our Northern Michigan heritage."

The new Kinlochen Lodge and Clubhouse will serve as the southern portal for the new pedestrian village. It will house all golfer services, a year-round restaurant and bar, cross-country ski operations and, on the building's upper two levels, 12 condominium units. The project should be completed in about six years.

Almost half a century old, Crystal Mountain is a family-owned, year-round resort featuring 36 holes of championship golf, 34 downhill slopes, 40 kilometers of cross-country trails, lodging, dining and IACC-approved conference facilities for groups of up to 300 people.

Crystal is also home to the Michigan Legacy Art Park, a non-profit 30-acre park blending art with nature through sculptures and art themes.
