The survey also reveals 59% of respondents indicate they would support additional funding for a new public transit system. Only 14% indicated they would oppose such a tax and 27% were unsure.
"There is encouraging news in this survey," said Paul Tait, SEMCOG executive director. "Southeast Michigan residents are seeing an increased need for a new system and they're telling us they're willing to pay for it. We will need this kind of consensus to move forward developing a plan, as well as a means to fund it and a way to govern it."
Results of the survey, conducted during January 2001 by an independent survey research firm, are based on interviews with randomly selected respondents from 1,404 households within the seven-county Southeast Michigan region, including the city of Detroit.
SEMCOG's 2025 Regional Transportation Plan for Southeast Michigan calls for the development of a regional transit vision. Since August 2000, SEMCOG has been meeting with the public, government officials, and business leaders, gathering information on what a new transit system should look like. This survey is one of the components used to create a plan that will be presented to SEMCOG's General Assembly for adoption in October 2001.
SEMCOG is a regional planning partnership of local governmental units serving the 4.8 million people in the seven-county region of Southeast Michigan.
