Southeast Michigan Residents Want New Transit System

DETROIT-Residents and business travelers are willing to pay for a new public transit system that is clean, safe, and inexpensive with frequent service to specific destinations, a new SEMCOG survey reveals.

DETROIT-Forty-two percent of Southeast Michigan residents are very likely to use a new public transit system that is clean, safe, and inexpensive with frequent service to specific destinations, according to a recent survey of current transportation issues and the future of public transit within the region conducted by SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments.

The survey also reveals 59% of respondents indicate they would support additional funding for a new public transit system. Only 14% indicated they would oppose such a tax and 27% were unsure.

“There is encouraging news in this survey,” said Paul Tait, SEMCOG executive director. “Southeast Michigan residents are seeing an increased need for a new system and they’re telling us they’re willing to pay for it. We will need this kind of consensus to move forward developing a plan, as well as a means to fund it and a way to govern it.”
