Plans call for a 240,000 sf convention center with large exhibit hall, meeting rooms, kitchen and prefunction area. The 317,000-sf connecting 20-story hotel will be joined to the convention center by a fully heated and air-conditioned connector tunnel, as well as a covered walkway.
Completion for the convention center and hotel is set for December, 2002. Turner Construction is building the convention center under a construction management contract, and the hotel, under a design/build contract.
The development manager for the hotel is a joint venture between the Garfield Corp. of Dallas and CB Richard Ellis of Kansas City. Serving as architects for both facilities are the DLR Group of Overland Park and TVS & Associates Inc. of Atlanta.
"Turner played an active role in the development and financing package for the hotel project, assembling and managing a team to make it happen after 15 years of planning," says Dewey Newton, preconstruction manager for Turner Construction. "The convention center had to be supported by a hotel and that was the challening part of the entire deal. We are so pleased to have helped put together the group that could make the city of Overland Park's dream a reality."
Turner Construction Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Turner Corp., is the nation's leading builder in the ranking first or second in major segments of the construction field. During 2000, the Dallas-based Turner Corp. completed $5.8 billion of construction. The company, founded in 1902,has 41 companies across the country. In 1999, Turner was acquired by HOCHTIEF AG, one of the world's leading international construction companies.
