"There is nothing like an outdoor concert music amphitheater in the San Antonio area," Adam Cole, vice president of real estate for Illinois-based SFX Entertainment Inc., tells GlobeSt.com. On May 19, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers will kick off the inaugural season for the amphitheater.

SFX Entertainment has acted as developer and Simmons & Associates of Indianapolis has been the architect. San Antonio-based Spaw Glass has served as general contractor for the project, which broke ground 10 months ago on land purchased from Retama Partners Ltd., the former owners of the Retama Race Park.

"The location is helping to confirm Selma as a destination for entertainment," Cole says. "We have Retama Race Park and also a brand new retail mall, the Forum. This location offers great accessibility to both San Antonio and Austin."

Cole estimates 20 to 30 concerts per year will be held, each attracting a full house. Of the 20,000 seats, 8,000 seats are under the amphitheater roof and the balance, lawn seats. The amphitheater has 7,000 parking spaces. Cole says the arena will serve both the Austin and San Antonio markets.

In south Austin, Hollywood-based HOB Entertainment Inc. plans to spend up to $20 million to renovate Southpark Meadows for a House of Blues that could seat up to 20,000 people and open as early as summer.
