SELMA, TX-SFX, the world’s largest producer and marketer of live entertainment, has unveiled its 20,000-seat Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Selma, a town just north of San Antonio. The 96-acre amphitheater sits near the intersection of Interstate 35 and Highway 1604. SFX, a wholly owned subsidiary of San Antonio-based Clear Channel Communications, owns amphitheater venues in 43 locations nationwide. It also manages the Cynthia Mitchell Woods Pavilion, located on the outskirts of Houston. San Antonio is ranked as the 32nd largest media market, according to Arbitron.
“There is nothing like an outdoor concert music amphitheater in the San Antonio area,” Adam Cole, vice president of real estate for Illinois-based SFX Entertainment Inc., tells GlobeSt.com. On May 19, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers will kick off the inaugural season for the amphitheater.
SFX Entertainment has acted as developer and Simmons & Associates of Indianapolis has been the architect. San Antonio-based Spaw Glass has served as general contractor for the project, which broke ground 10 months ago on land purchased from Retama Partners Ltd., the former owners of the Retama Race Park.
