The approvals earlier this month kick off the so-called North Embarcadero redevelopment plan. The coastal commission also approved the concept of a hotel at the current site of a parking lot at the foot of Broadway, along with an expansion of the city's cruise-ship terminal and improvements to streets, parks and walkways.

The hotel would be at a site called Lane Field, which once hosted Pacific Coast League ball games before the Padres joined the big leagues. Some people have proposed a park for the area, while others favored putting a performing arts or cultural center there.
