BIG PICTURE: Confidence Remains in the Face of Wild Stock Swings

NEW YORK CITY-Who knows when Mr. Dow's Wild Ride may end? But most real estate professionals are confident that they are immune--at least for now.

NEW YORK CITY-A Wall Street rally on Friday didn’t do much to relieve the tension that exists after a week of wild stock market swings. Midweek delivered a one/two punch of bad news, as investors watched the Dow Jones Industrial Average plummet more than 230 points on Wednesday and a whopping 400-points on Thursday–only to recover to within a point of its opening-bell high by day’s end. The Nasdaq and S&P have both been tracking equally hair-raising courses.

As we kick off a new week, various reports understandably reveal more hope than confidence on the part of investors. But, while some of Wall Street’s creeping fear echoes along Main Street, most executives around the country still bank on the soundness of the fundamentals–even to the point of dubbing the real estate sector a safe haven for harried investors.

Is there concern? Of course there is. Kenneth Levien of Levien and Co. Inc. tells Northeast bureau chief Amy Vaughn that he’s already seeing some of his office clients pull in their talons.
