Apartment Rents Soar in Westchester County

WHITE PLAINS-The average rental costs for two- and three-bedroom units in Westchester County skyrocketed last year, according to a report released by Westchester Residential Opportunities Inc., a not-for-profit housing organization.

WHITE PLAINS-A not-for-profit housing organization charges that apartment rental costs in Westchester County soared last year. Westchester Residential Opportunities Inc., a not-for-profit fair housing organization, states that its report was based on compiling data from asking rents as advertised in local newspapers and from its own apartment listing service. Broker fees and other charges were excluded from the analysis.

The average rent on a three-bedroom apartment in Westchester County increased 39% from 1999 to 2000 according to fourth-quarter and full-year reports released by WRO. Two-bedroom rental rates increased 30%, and one-bedroom rates 6%. Studio unit rates decreased 4%, the agency reports.

The countywide average monthly rent on a three-bedroom unit was $1,898 in the fourth quarter of 2000 and $1,932 for the entire year. WRO reported that a yearly income in excess of $75,000 would be needed to afford the rents charged for the three-bedroom units.
