A consortium of arts patrons and development interests backing conversion of theatre into a center for performing arts hope it will be completed by fall 2003. The City Council, acting as the redevelopment agency, Tuesday approved the transfer of theater ownership to the consortium.

The city bought the 75-year-old theater in 1985. Since than, the city has paid more than $5 million to maintain the facility.

In return for giving up ownership, the city would get a percentage of income the theater near Horton Plaza generates over the next three decades. The San Diego Convention Center Corp. will manage the theater.
