Fort Point Channel Tries to Achieve Historic Status

BOSTON-As developers swoop in and build up the waterfront district, the residents of the Fort Point Channel district here attempt to achieve historic status. The decision could have a major impact on future development.

BOSTON-As developers hungrily eye the waterfront district, residents of Fort Point Channel are seeking to preserve their neighborhood by appealing to the Boston Landmarks Commission to be considered for historic status. If the designation is achieved, buildings in this district could not be destroyed or even changed without public approval.

The Commission has agreed to consider providing the area with that status, which could impact Fort Point Channel’s development. Boston Wharf Co. owns 50 properties in the district and Beacon Capital Partners owns 6.8 acres here, which it plans to develop into two office buildings, residential housing and 1,200 parking spaces.
