"We just realized we had a decidedly different idea of how to do business," Prentice tells GlobeSt.com. Prentice says his company pulled out of managing Volcano Grill, Mash (a potato-based restaurant), a brew pub and Cosmo's, a pizza maker.
"We were doing fine, when they came to us and said they wanted to change their pro forma," Prentice says. "I felt they were wrong, and wouldn't succeed with what they wanted to do, and refused to change my plans."
The dispute reportedly included that Loeks wanted a Chinese restaurant at the site, and a more casual style over a controlled, fine-dining atmosphere. The restaurants and the theater are one of the most populated theaters in the state, and were recently voted the best place to see a movie by a reader's poll in the Detroit-based Metro Times.
Loeks officials were unavailable for comment. The restaurants will stay open until changes are made.
The theater includes 20 screens and 6,000 seats. The 185,000-sf theater complex is the largest in Michigan.
The Star Southfield complex was developed by Star Southfield LLC, a joint venture between Star Theatres and Millennium Partners. Star Theatres is a joint venture between Loeks-Star Theatres of Michigan and Sony Retail Entertainment.
