The 132-store company would not disclose the construction cost but industry estimators familiar with comparable projects tell GlobeSt.com the hard cost is at least $1.35 million or about $75 per sf.

Cost Plus World Market operates two other Atlanta stores in Perimeter, just north of the city and Cumberland, a western suburb.

Officials say in a prepared statement a typical Cost Plus World Market store has 16,000 sf of selling space with a 45% first-year cash flow return on investment.

New stores average $3 million in sales their first year and generally mature at about $4.5 million by the fifth year of operation, according to the company's statement.

"The idea we have is to take advantage of economies of scale," Melissa Oldenbourg, marketing manager of Cost Plus World Market, tells GlobeSt.com. "When we go into a market we try to take advantage of splitting the costs over a variety of stores."
