The new facility contains five artist studios, an art gallery, coffeehouse, performance space and a student art gallery for displaying works by area schoolchildren. The space allows the public to watch artists at work, while offering artists exposure to art consumers. Poetry readings, puppet shows and other arts entertainment will be held on the site.

Volunteer artists have been working for several weeks to get the facility ready for the opening. The new space is the first step toward the three-year-old collective's plan for an even larger arts center, with 40 to 50 studio spaces.

101 Artists Colony president and architect James Durfey designed the facility. The Downtown Encinitas MainStreet Association leased the facility and will sublet space to artists for $200 to $325 per month.
