The 600-room, $70-million expansion is designed to accommodate a growing convention and business traveler market in the Atlanta area, despite a softening economy in other markets.

The tower addition expands the existing 470-room hotel property, located adjacent to the Georgia World Conference Center and Centennial Olympic Park. It is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2004.

Omni officials tell GlobeSt.com they were in partnership with Turner before the CNN property, so the decision to build the tower was made long before before reports of a lagging economy nationwide.

"Omni is taking the long view that this hotel will not come on line until 2004, so it is our belief there will be several swings between now and then," Kim Blackmon, corporate communications manager for Omni Hotels, tells GlobeSt.com. "We are looking to what it will be at that time."

Blackmon wouldn't disclose the hotel's current occupancy and gross revenues. The average room rate range is $159 to $325 per night.
