He built the family-owned and operated 200-room Langford Resort Hotel at New England and Interlachen Avenues in suburban Winter Park in 1956 for $1 million or $5,000 per room. The replacement cost today would be at least $30 million or $150,000 per room, construction industry estimators tell GlobeSt.com.

After 44 years of continuous operation, the hotel was sold last summer to a Naples, FL investor group for an undisclosed sum. The Langford has been closed since June 2000. The property is located in one of the most desirable and high-priced Winter Park residential/commercial areas.

In its heyday, the hotel attracted the rich and famous as well as the notorious. The Langford's main magnet was its secluded location, Winter Park old-timers tell GlobeSt.com.
