Legendary Hotelier Robert Langford Dies at 88

WINTER PARK, FL-The Chicago-born developer/investor built the 200-room Langford Resort Hotel, Orlando area's first air-conditioned lodge in 1956, for $1 million or $5,000 per room. The replacement cost today would be $30 million, industry estimators tell GlobeSt.com.

WINTER PARK, FL-Robert E. Langford, the Chicago-born developer/investor who built Orlando area’s first air-conditioned hotel in 1956, is dead at 88 of heart failure.

He built the family-owned and operated 200-room Langford Resort Hotel at New England and Interlachen Avenues in suburban Winter Park in 1956 for $1 million or $5,000 per room. The replacement cost today would be at least $30 million or $150,000 per room, construction industry estimators tell GlobeSt.com.

After 44 years of continuous operation, the hotel was sold last summer to a Naples, FL investor group for an undisclosed sum. The Langford has been closed since June 2000. The property is located in one of the most desirable and high-priced Winter Park residential/commercial areas.
