Pirelli's $141-million investment in the plant equates to a hard construction cost of $352 per sf. The facility will employ 305 workers over the next three years and is expected to produce 1.5 million high-performance tires annually for cars, light trucks and SUVs.

Company officials tell GlobeSt.com they were drawn to the area based on the concentration of car manufacturing and automotive facilities in the Southeast.

"Based on what we know there seem to be many very high profile companies other than ourselves moving into that area, so we see it as an area that is going to be growing," Kevin Gilhuly, director of communications for Pirellli North America, tells GlobeSt.com.

He says, "We believe it will be conducive to economic growth over the next couple of years as a result not only of our relocation, but also other companies that have moved in as well."

Pirelli Tire operates 22 plants worldwide in the production of high-performance tires for the racing and consumer automotive industries.
