The expansion project was approved by the Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee. Plans call for the addition of more maternity suites and a critical care unit. The radiology area, medical and surgical areas, the lobby and outpatient areas will be expanded and the number of inpatient beds will increase from 59 to 80. This is the second major expansion for the hospital since it opened in 1989.
St. Luke's Northland also operates a hospital in nearby Smithville, MO, just to the west. Combined, the two facilities have more than 750 employees, nearly 350 physicians and an annual payroll of more than $20 million.
"Through this significant investment, we at St. Luke's Northland Hospital and St. Luke's-Shawnee Mission Health System are committing to the future of the Northland and continuing to provide families with the highest quality health care," says N. Gary Wages, president and chief executive officer of St. Luke's Northland.
Work is scheduled to begin early next year and be completed by 2003. In addition to the work planned for St. Luke's Northland, recent expansions at hospitals north of the river have also taken place at Liberty Hospital and North Kansas City Hospital.
"Although St. Luke's Northland Hospital is the Northland's newest acute-care hospital, it has quickly proven its value in service to this rapidly growing area," says G. Richard Hastings, president and chief executive officer of the St. Luke's-Shawnee Mission Health System.
