A large portion of the money, about $70 million, will be used to install air conditioning and upgrade mechanical systems in the 28 buildings that currently do not have air conditioning. Work will also be done on a number of other schools.

A special meeting held by the school board resulted in members giving the go-ahead to the J.E. Dunn Construction Co., the district's construction manager, to ask for the first round of bids for work to be done on 19 elementary schools this summer.

First-year projects are expected to cost about $32 million and school officials are optimistic the work will be finished in time for school next year. The bond issue was in the top five ever passed in the state.

"It's not an administration accomplishment, it's not a board of education accomplishment," says Assistant Superintendent Tom Kurucz. "It's a community accomplishment."

Tax increases for commercial property owners will break down as an extra $235.25 for the owner of a $100,000 building. The owner of a $250,000 building will be assessed an additional $588.13.
