The permit for his current strip mining operation expires in five years. He had proposed an extension for the next 75 years. County officials had indicated they would endorse a plan to allow mining for the next 75 years, but that strip mining should cease in 2006.
Barber withdrew his proposal, citing lack of support from county legislators. County Executive Katheryn Shields had indicated she would veto the plan even if the county legislature had approved it.
