KANSAS CITY-Activity on the East Side of Downtown has long lacked new development, but that’s about to change. A redevelopment plan has been announced that will bring new life to a neglected area between 19th and 25th streets, from Brooklyn to The Paseo.

The area is the former home of Municipal Stadium, where the Chiefs and the Royals played until the 1970s. It is just blocks away from the 18th and Vine historic jazz district.

The new plan, called the Vine Street District, calls for the construction of 550 residential units, 50,000 sf to be used for retail and commercial space and 16,000 sf for office space. The project is a partnership among the Black Economic Union, Bank of America and a community group called Move Up. Construction is expected to cost about $42 million.
