Wells Fargo has not yet applied for a zoning change on a 60-acre parcel at the northwest corner of Price and Queen Creek roads, even though two months ago Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny said that an announcement by the banking giant is forthcoming. Wells is in escrow in the parcel, Tibshraeny said.

Wells Fargo has confirmed its interest in building a campus in Chandler, but a company spokesperson says it's too early in the process to confirm just when the development would move forward.

Doug Ballard, Chandler's director of planning and development, says he doesn't expect to see anything submitted at this time.

Tibshraeny has said that the bank will build a one-million-sf campus that includes office space for managerial, technical and customer service departments. Wells Fargo would consolidate some of its operations from around the Valley at the site, but specifically how much has not yet been determined.

Wells Fargo has a southwest regional headquarters in Phoenix and 265 branches in the state, along with about 8,800 employees.

Chandler is a suburb about 20 miles southeast of downtown Phoenix. It has been one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation for the past decade. In 1980 the population was 30,000, and now it is approximately 175,000.
