Appearing healthy and active, Genentech broke ground on a 280,000-sf expansion of the Founders Research Center in South San Francisco close on the heels of completion of an 112,000 sf facility. At its 2003 completion, the Genentech expansion will be one of the largest biotech facilities in the world.

Tularik Inc is also scouting about 250,000 sf of additional research and development space in South San Francisco to augment and already existing 140,00 sf space on Corporate Drive.

The Berkeley-based biotech arm of Bayer Corp bought 14 acres last year for development of a $120 million, two-building complex that will total 180,000 sf of space. Also in Berkeley, iKnowMed, a web-based firm, recent consolidated three locations into 33,000 sf of space at a former warehouse.

The Gladstone Institute recently closed on an approximate acre site at Mission Bay for a $100 million, 180,000-sf facility. The attraction of the location is the proximity to the planned 2.6 million sf University of California at San Francisco's research campus.

Work has started on the first building of the UCSF campus, a 400,000 sf home for the molecular, cellular biology and human genome departments. Mission Bay developer Catellus Corp. plans for the area around the campus to be a major biotech center.

In addition the Port of San Francisco wants to build 600,000 sf of research and development facilities at Pier 70. The Port issued an RFP in March and offers incentives like the promise of a 66-year lease in exchange for a percentage of the rents.
