SACRAMENTO-Once thought a toxic nightmare, the city was thrilled to learn recently that an 87-year-old mill site at the corner of C and 12th streets will cost approximately $40,000 to cleanup instead of the $250,000 originally figured. The news increases the chances that the mill will be redeveloped sooner rather than later, improving the view from one gateway to the city.

The council purchased the property — a five-story mill and more than 28 silos — for $69,000 after the assessors office held an auction for the property no one bothered to bid on it. The city scooped it up for taxes owed. Now the city hopes to move forward with plans to redevelop the site into offices and retail space.
