In clearing the final Senate committee, the bill filed by Sen. J. Alex Villalobos (R-Miami) now becomes eligible for a full Senate vote.

The bill is converging with a companion bill filed by Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Miami) in the state House of Representatives, which passed through final committee action last week.

Both bills must receive final approval from each legislative chamber prior to May 3, when the state Legislature concludes 2001 session, in addition to surviving any gubernatorial veto.

Each bill restricts the portion of sales tax the Marlins now collects playing games at its present home in Pro Player Stadium, a facility the late Joe Robbie constructed with private financing.

The bills propose the use of sales tax collected in excess of the present amount to help finance a proposed retractable-roof stadium on a 20-acre site adjacent to the Miami River.
