Greenwood Market Unsold For Now

SEATTLE-The popular neighborhood grocery store at 8500 3rd Avenue N.--recently rumored to be in the clutches of the Portland-based Fred Meyer supermarket chain, which operates an adjacent location--will remain independent, at least for now.

SEATTLE-Local shoppers waiting for Goliath to come in a scoop up another David will have to keep waiting. The Greenwood Market, a popular neighborhood grocery store at 8500 3rd Avenue N. recently rumored to have been acquired by the Portland-based Fred Meyer supermarket chain, is remaining independent – at least for now.

Fred Meyer reportedly had proposed to buy the Greenwood Market and expand its own adjacent location. But Larry Nakata, whose family owns and operates several successful neighborhood markets in King and Kitsap counties, says that any offers being considered might never be consummated, in part because a local citizens group questioning the deal is concerned the remodel would not fit the community’s plan for its commercial district.
