Lawmakers Discuss Commercial Lien Extension

TOPEKA, KS-A bill proposes a six-month time frame for contractors to file a construction lien, twice as long as current law. The measure passes 37-3 in the Senate and is being debated in the House.

TOPEKA, KS-Kansas lawmakers this week are hearing arguments in regard to Senate Bill 197, which would extend the length of time commercial building contractors would have to file a construction lien from three months to six months. Missouri law allows contractors six months from the time materials are delivered or when contract work is finished to file a claim to recover unpaid debt.

The measure passed 37-3 in the Kansas Senate, but is now being debated in the House.
