The property, in the South Lake Union district where Allen has been collecting parcels for years, is about a mile removed from this city's famous "Pill Hill," home to most of the region's major hospitals. Harbor Properties will meet with the city's Design Review Board as early next week to discuss the early stages of the project.
According to the city's Department of Design, Construction and Land Use, Harbor applied for a 100,000 square-foot building at 307 Westlake Avenue North, the main thoroughfare linking downtown to Lake Union, an in-city fresh water lake lined with houseboats, restaurants and boat builders.
Allen, whose company owns the National Football League's Seattle Seahawks and is building a new stadium for he team on the old Kingdome site, has attempted to transform the south Lake Union District into a city park on two different occasions. Local voters twice rejected plans for the park, mainly because it would have displaced businesses that have been in the area for years. Although Allen's Vulcan Northwest has been rumored to have elaborate plans to develop specific blocks of the south Lake Union District, very little has been done so far in the area.
Harbor Resorts, a subsidiary of Seattle-based Harbor Properties, Inc., has been the portion of the company that has grabbed the most recent commercial real estate headlines. The company owns three regional ski resorts – Idaho's Schweitzer Mountain and central Washington's Stevens Pass and Mission Ridge – offering a combined 5,775 acres of ski able terrain. The company recently announced a commercial-residential plan for Schweitzer Mountain. Harbor Properties currently manages 460,000 square feet of commercial office and retail space and 1.6 million square feet of apartment space in Seattle.
Harbor Properties, a Seattle-based private company, also recently entered into an agreement with Spokane-based WestCoast Hospitality Corp. to help manage some of the resort units.
Earlier this year, Harbor and Vulcan agreed to partner on an apartment project in the Cascade neighborhood, several blocks south of the south Lake Union site. A Cascade neighborhood association is presently reviewing the apartment building at Minor Avenue North at Thomas Street.
