David Kopp, property director for the mall, confirms for GlobeSt.com that the letters were sent out, but emphasizes that the project is in the very preliminary stages. "We are trying to determine if this is possible," he says. Kopp adds he has gotten some very positive responses to the mailing.

The current mall is 310,000 sf but the Louisville, Kentucky-based owner would like an expanded version to be in a league with the South Shore Plaza, the largest mall south of Boston. According to Kopp a new exit on Route 95 to accommodate the mall would likely be considered. Currently, cars coming from the Walpole Mall can only go North onto Route 95.

Walpole Mall saw many of its storefronts go empty in the early 1990s, but the mall has been revitalized in the last few years as retailers such as Old Navy and Barnes and Noble became tenants. One of its anchor tenants, Bradlees, went bankrupt a few months ago but reportedly there is interest in that space.
