"Amtrak's new Acela Express stop in Stamford will help reduce traffic congestion, and provide faster, more efficient service to Fairfield County's rail passengers," said Shays. "High-speed rail can increase transportation capacity at a fraction of the cost of building new highways and will go a long way toward alleviating the increasing delays of air travel by shifting short- haul passengers to the rails."

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is currently making major improvements to the Stamford train station, with the support of Amtrak and Metro North. Completion of the work on the $95 million project, which will make the station more modern, is expected in the next two years.

Among the station upgrades will be the expansion of the station from two to four platforms to accommodate the expected increased Acela Express Stamford ridership, Amtrak officials related. Station upgrades will also include construction of two high-level center platforms allowing for up to four trains in the station at one time, new signage, new seating areas, better lighting and two elevators from platform level to station level.

"New England has been key to the early success of Acela Express," says Amtrak Northeast Corridor President Stan Bagley. "More than a third of the 80,000-plus people who've taken Acela Express since service began in December have boarded in New England and we're confident that ridership in this area will continue to grow with the addition of the Stamford stop."

Amtrak officials note that ridership on Acela Express in Stamford is expected to be strong because of the large number of Fortune 500 companies located in the area. They add that Acela Express also opens up markets for travel such as Stamford-Philadelphia, Stamford-Wilmington and Stamford- Trenton.

The Acela express weekday schedule includes stops in Stamford at: 9:57 a.m., 5:57 p.m. and 7:57 p.m. with arrival in New York City at 10:42 a.m., 6:42 p.m. and 8:42 p.m. respectively. Northbound service includes stops in Stamford at: 7:46 a.m., 8:46 a.m. and 6:44 p.m. with arrivals in Boston at: 10:33 a.m., 11:33 a.m. and 9:31 p.m.
